In 1962 Henry Bradley returned from competing the "Great Argentine Prize" and asked his friend Roman "Nicky" Alzamora, at that time Director of the Peruvian Automobile Club, why there was not an event like that in Peru.
With that came the idea of creating the Incas Rally. They both started to design the route in the map of Peru and drew up an initial route of Lima-Tarma-Huancayo (passing by Lomo Largo) Ayacucho-Cusco-Tacna-Arequipa-Lima. But, as they didn't want the event to last more than a week, they had to suppress the route to how it's run today (Lima-Huancayo-Ayacucho-Cusco-Arequipa-Lima).
It took some time to verify the conditions of the roads, the possible accommodations and other important factors.
When the project was ready, Alzamora presented it to Eduardo Dibos Chappuis who was the President of the Club at that time. He rejected the idea.
Alzamora became absent at the Club, and after fourth months he was called back to inform him that the event was going to be accepted.
An organisation made of Roman "Nicky "Alzamora Traverso, Emilio Bellido Salazar and Pedro Roca Ribot started working on the project. When it became ready, they entrusted the route to Bellido.
When Bellido returned with the report of the route, the Board of the Club decided to make the first Incas Rally in 1966.
In 1974 and 1975 the President of Peru prohibited the races by fuel due to saving reasons; therefore, the rally was not run.
In 1982, 1983, and 1984 the route was altered due to terrorism in the country, avoiding the area of Ayacucho. Instead, the rally went to places like the forests of Peru before it went back to its original route in 1985.
